چکیده

Ultrasonic vibration generates the sensation of sound via bone-conduction; the phenomenon is called bone-conducted ultrasonic hearing. Complex sounds also can be perceived by amplitude-modulated bone-conducted ultrasound (AM-BCU). In this study, three experiments were conducted to examine whether interaural time differences in the amplitude envelopes (envelope-ITDs) and interaural intensity differences (IIDs) can be used as cues for lateralization of bilaterally applied AM-BCUs. These were discrimination experiments of envelope-ITDs, IIDs and their combination. AM-BCU stimuli were created by modulating a 30-kHz sinusoid with lowpass noises with various cut-off frequencies. The results showed that polarities of envelope-ITDs or IIDs on bilateral AM-BCUs were discriminated, i.e., envelope-proceeding sides or intensity-exceeding sides of bilateral AMBCUs were detected. Also, the discrimination thresholds of the polarities of IIDs were compensated by envelope-ITDs, i.e., the time-intensity trading was observed in the AM-BCU perception. These findings indicate that the auditory system has the ability for lateralization using envelope-ITDs and IIDs of bilateral AM-BCUs. Further, it is suggested that bilateral AMBCUs are processed in the auditory pathway associated with lateralization in a similar manner to high-frequency amplitude-modulated sounds.

Auditory Lateralization Ability in Children with (Central) Auditory Processing Disorder

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to assess the auditory lateralization ability in children with (central) auditory processing disorder. Methods: Participants were divided in two groups: 15 children with Central Auditory Processing Disorder (8-10 years) and 80 normal children (8-11 years) from both genders with pure-tone air-conduction thresholds better than 20 dB HL bilaterally a...

Auditory brain stem responses evoked by lateralized clicks: is lateralization extracted in the human brain stem?

The dependence of binaurally evoked auditory brain stem responses and the binaural difference potential on simultaneously presented interaural time and level differences is investigated in order to assess the representation of stimulus lateralization in the brain stem. Auditory brain stem responses to binaural click stimuli with all combinations of three interaural time and three interaural lev...

Frequency-following response: effects of interaural time and intensity differences.

This research investigated whether brainstem neural mechanisms that mediate lateralization of sounds can be extracted from the frequency-following response (FFR). Monaural and binaural FFRs were obtained from normal-hearing subjects to low-frequency (500 Hz) linearly gated tone bursts (4-4-4 msec) at 40, 50, and 60 dB SL and four interaural time differences (ITDs) (0, 333, 500, and 667 microsec...

Binaural summation and lateralization of transients: a combined analysis.

Subjects judged the loudness and the lateral position of dichotic transient signals, which were presented at equal and unequal levels, synchronously and asynchronously, to the two ears. Binaural loudness summation of clicks does not obey a law of linear addition: It is partial at low level and superadditive at high level. Supersummation is greater for interaurally delayed clicks than for coinci...

Relative influence of interaural time and intensity differences on lateralization is modulated by attention to one or the other cue: 500-Hz sine tones.

When interaural time differences and interaural intensity differences are set into opposition, the measured trading ratio depends on which cue is adjusted by the listener. In an earlier article [Lang, A.-G., and Buchner, A., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 3120-3131 (2008)], four experiments showed that the perceived localization of a broad band sound for which differences in one cue were compensated ...
